As a Financial Advisor and soccer enthusiast, I’ve always emphasized the strategic and creative use of financial tools. Soccer has always held a special place in my heart, from playing competitively growing up to cheering passionately from the sidelines. These experiences have created lasting memories, lifelong friends and fostered a deep passion for the game. Recently, I had the opportunity to blend my financial expertise with my love for soccer by leveraging my life insurance policy to invest in the Ottawa Rapid FC.

Understanding the Power of Participating Life Insurance

Following the strategic examples of successful entities such as Disney, McDonald’s, Rogers, and even Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda, participating life insurance uniquely combines permanent life insurance protection with a growing cash value (investment) component. Policyholders benefit from dividends that can be reinvested, applied toward premiums, or accessed directly for other financial opportunities. The ability to borrow against this accumulated cash value offers flexible, tax-efficient liquidity. Avoiding the tax implications associated with selling other financial assets was a significant factor in my decision.

Why Ottawa Rapid FC?

When I first heard about Ottawa Rapid FC’s vision of establishing a premier women’s professional soccer club, I was immediately drawn to the initiative. As both a business owner and a financial professional, investing in ventures that align with my values and offer robust growth potential is essential.

The ownership group behind Ottawa Rapid FC includes prominent investors, local business leaders, and experienced sports executives who are committed to sustainability and excellence. Their focus on community engagement and promoting women’s sports resonated deeply with my personal and professional values.

Leveraging the Cash Value of My Policy

Rather than liquidating investments or seeking traditional bank financing, I utilized my life insurance policy. Here’s how this approach worked in my favor:

  • Immediate Liquidity: I borrowed against the cash value of my Manulife policy, receiving funds quickly-within days of my request-without incurring tax liabilities or disrupting other investments.
  • Continued Policy Benefits: My policy remains active, allowing me to continue earning dividends despite having borrowed from its cash value.
  • Flexibility and Control: Policy loans require no financial underwriting based on income and offer flexible repayment terms, including the option to deduct the loan amount from the policy’s death benefit (my plan).
  • Asset Preservation: By choosing a policy loan, I avoided selling other investments in potentially unfavorable market conditions such as the current tariff war, preserving the integrity of my overall financial plan.

A Strategic Investment with Community Impact

Investing in Ottawa Rapid FC is more than a financial decision-it’s a meaningful commitment to our community and the advancement of women’s sports in Canada. Joining the ownership group is an honor and strategically aligns with my broader vision of making impactful investments.

My experience highlights that financial planning extends beyond merely growing wealth; it involves using sophisticated strategies to seize opportunities that align with your values and objectives. Participating life insurance offers a compelling yet underutilized means to access capital efficiently.
